Work from latinx artist on art, science and technology gets featured on the cover of prestigious journal
Oakland, California: Leonardo Journal, the leading international scholarly journal on the use of contemporary science and technology in the arts and music, published its April issue featuring on its cover the work of Uruguayan artist and scientist Martin Calvino, who described creating computational art inspired by plant genome browsers. Leonardo is published by MIT Press six times a year and has focused on communicating the work of renowned artists, scientists, and technologists for the past 50 years. It is the first time in the history of the magazine that the work of an Uruguayan artist has made it to the cover.
The importance of Calvino's work lies in the artistic questioning and reinterpretation of established visual representations of genes and genomes traditionally used by the scientific community. In relation to Calvino's work on computational art and genomics, Turkish researcher and curator Bilge Hasdemir wrote: “Calvino fuses his two great passions: art and science. This enthusiasm leads him to bring a new form of creative expression that transmits scientific knowledge in artistic form. Consequently, it is not surprising that the challenge, which is primarily identified as scientific, often turns into creative artistic experimentation. And he proposes a new and fascinating idea that will be approached below, again with a scientific mind but with an artistic sensibility”.
This work is part of Calvino's ongoing line of artistic expression that he calls Geometric And Genomic AbstractionISM, in which he seizes bioinformatics tools from the scientific community alongside genome data as the raw material for computational art. A second work of his is scheduled to be published in print in the next issue of Leonardo in August 2021.
